The 11 Step Process of Carpet & Upholstry Cleaning
At Overcast Restoration Inc. we pride ourselves in our ten step carpet cleaning process.  This process follows the guidelines set forth by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC), a nonprofit group owned by various trade organizations in the cleaning and restoration industries.  The IICRC's purpose is to provide certification and training courses, test, certify, and set standards for all of the cleaning and restoration industry.   Let's look at all of the steps with a brief explanation of each one.

1.  Pre-inspect   This is the step in which your carpets and upholstery are looked over and sometimes tested.  A careful pre-inspection is necessary to determine the correct cleaning procedures and chemical needs for each textile cleaned.  It is also necessary so that potential problems can be pointed out and addressed.

2.   Dry Vacuuming   Vacuuming your carpets and upholstery is such an important step in cleaning, that the IICRC requires it on every cleaning.  The reason is that up to 79% of the soil in your carpets and upholstery is dry, particulate soil that is easiest to remove with a dry vacuum.  Most cleaners, even those that call themselves professionals, skip this step.  In order to better serve you we do not.

3.  Pretreatment    Your carpets and upholstery are then pre-treated with appropriate chemicals in order to loosen soil.  We pre-treat the entire area to be cleaned, not just the spots. This insures that your carpets and upholstery are all cleaned, and not just made wet.  We also have at our disposal many different detergents and solutions so that we can use the ones that best suit the soil level and construction of article that we are cleaning, not like most budget cleaners that only use one for all situations, if any at all.

4. Agitation   The pretreatment applied is then agitated, or worked into the face fibers of high soil areas  in order to help loosen stubborn soils and to insure uniform application of the pre-treatment.

5.  Edging  The carpet is “cut in” or edged with our special edging tool.  This allows us to clean right up to the edge, in the corners, and right up to any furniture that is not going to be moved.

6.  Extraction   This is the process that involves using our powerful truckmounted  hot water extractor (Steam Cleaner) to remove both the soil and the detergent residue from the carpet.  How this works is water is heated by the truck and brought into the hose through our solution hose.  The hot water is then injected into the carpets face yarns and immediately vacuumed up and set out to our truck for collection in our waste tank.  Great care is taken to not over wet the carpet and to remove as much soiling and water as possible.

7.  Final spotting  Generally the above process will remove almost all of the spots from the carpets and upholstery, but sometimes more difficult spots or stains will remain.  This is the step in which we attempt to remove them.  Please remember that not all stains can be corrected, but we will do all that we can to keep you informed of the more difficult stains and communicate to you your options.

8. Neutralize After all use of detergents and spotting chemicals, we neutralize your carpets and upholstery to remove any residual detergents and to assure that the fabrics are returned to there original pH levels.

9. Post-inspect    Your textiles are then inspected again to insure that all areas look and perform to their optimum abilities.

10.  Groom    Grooming is the process of aligning the fibers in your carpet and upholstery.  This helps the fabrics to dry better and also makes it look its best.

11. Drying    Powerful airmovers are then directed across your carpets and upholstery in order to help speed the drying process.  Please note that we don't leave the airmovers on until the carpets are completely dry in most cases, but even running for a few minutes the airmovers greatly reduce the drying time.

Why Should I Clean my Carpet?

In the past, people only cleaned their carpets when they were visibly very soiled.  The common misconception was that they needed to wait as long as possible to clean their carpets because cleaning them caused them to soil quicker.  The source of this miss conception was that when wall to wall carpets first became popular, there were very limited ways to clean them.  The most common method was to brush soaps made with coconut oil into the carpet and let it dry.  This method left a sticky residue that attracted soil, and has not been used in this industry in years.  We at Overcast Restoration Inc. use truck mounted hot water extraction, or “steam cleaning”, along with latest in detergent technology in order to clean your carpets and upholstery.
Lets take a few minutes to discuss the three basic reasons for why you should clean your carpets and upholstery on a regular basis.

1.  Health is the largest reason that everyone should have their carpets cleaned often.  Dr. Michael Berry, deputy director for the National Center for Environmental Assessment, US Environmental Protection Agency, in his book, Cleaning for Health, Protecting The Built Environment, points out these seven things that deal with maintaining the indoor environment.
1.  Carpet acts like a filter in the indoor environment by trapping soils, gases, and human or animal dander.
2.  Excess build up of soils in carpet may have and adverse on the indoor environment.
3.  Soils, volatile organic compounds (VOC) and biopollutants be remove to maintain a healthy indoor environment.
4.  Maximize the extraction of pollutants from the building envelope.
5. Minimize chemical, particle, and moister residue.
6.  Minimize human exposure to pollutants.
7.  Properly dispose of cleaning wastes.

Studies have shown that Hot water extraction is the best method of removing not only everyday soils and pollutants, but also greatly reduce the number of biopollutants in carpet and upholstery, not only because of the high heat, but because of the fact that pollutants are removed from the home to the truck and then safely and environmentally responsibly disposed of.  The bottom line is that carpet needs to be cleaned when it is biologically soiled, and should not be delayed until it’s surface is soiled.

2. Asset management is a concern that most people don’t consider when having their carpets cleaned. What I mean is that carpet, on average, is a home owners third largest investment.  With the average price for carpet being around $24.00 per yard, the average home has several thousand dollars in carpeting alone.  Routine cleaning is recommended by the carpet manufacturers to not only maintain appearance, but to also promote a long life for the carpet.  Soiling is the number one enemy and destroyer of carpets.  The average piece of sand has around 25 cutting edges on it that work to degrade carpet every time it is exposed to traffic.  Modern carpets are designed to hide oiling, so that by the time a carpet appears soiled on the surface, it may already be to late to reverse some of the damage.

3. Appearance cleaning is third, and unfortunately, the biggest reason that most people clean their carpets and upholstery,  While dirty carpets are an embarrassing eyesore, I hope that in the above sections you have learned that cleaning only for the appearance of the carpet is not the only reason to have your carpets cleaned regularly.  With the above stated facts about how modern carpets hide soils, I would also like to point out a few more facts for you.  The more soiled a carpet is, the more harsh of detergents are needed to clean them.  These more powerful solutions can impair the stain repellence of newer generation carpets with any kind of stain guard on them.  Also some spots and spills that are on carpet may permanently damage the carpet and become permanent stains if not removed as soon as possible.

What is Carpet Protector?

Overcast Restoration Inc. uses Bridgepoint’s Maxim®  flourochemical carpet protector with acid dye blockers.  Let me take a few minutes to describe what all that techno-jargon means and how it will help you with your carpet maintenance.
Most carpets have some kind of fluorochemical protector installed on them at the carpet mill.  These carpets are sold under a variety of different names but are all commonly referred to as Stain Resistant carpets.  This protector will eventually lose effectiveness due to normal traffic and age.  Reapplication of protector is helpful in keeping you carpets performance at optimum levels.
Carpet protectors are applied to the surface yarns of a carpet to change both the surface tension and the surface energy of the carpet.  This helps your carpet in four ways.

1.  The primary purpose of fabric protector is to prevent particulate soil from penetrating to deep into the carpet fiber.  This makes vacuuming more efficient.  Please remember from our Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Process, and our Why should I Clean My Carpets sections, that particulate soils (the soils that can be removed by thorough vacuuming) is the number one destroyer of carpets.  By making your vacuuming more efficient it helps to prolong the useful life of your carpets.

2. The second way that carpet protector helps with is repelling water based spills,  such as juice, cola, tea, etc.  This works also by not letting the spill penetrate deeply into the fibers, giving you more time to clean the spill up.

3. Carpet protector also helps protect against and repel oil based spots such as asphalt, motor oil, some cosmetics, crayon, ect..  This is accomplished in the same way as in repelling water based stains.

4.  The Acid Dye blocker part of the protector is modern technology used to combat acid dye stains such as Kool-aid, wine, juice and such.  Often with treated carpets these spills can be easily removed without warranting special treatments.

The most important thing to remember about carpet protectors is that  they don’t make the carpets “bullet proof.”  If a spill occurs on your carpet, you need to give immediate attention to it.  The protector will give you time to clean it up, but after the surface tension around the carpet fibers are broken, the spill can soak into the fibers, making the spill more difficult, and sometimes impossible to remove.

After Cleaning Care Tips

Here are a few tips for you to use in the care of your carpets and upholstery now that they have been professionally cleaned by Overcast Restoration Inc.

Tabs or blocks have been place under your furniture in order to prevent damage to them or the carpet while your carpet dries.  Please leave them in place for at least 24 hours after cleaning.  Even though it takes only a fraction of that time for the carpet to dry, this insures that no damage can take place.

Try to keep traffic to a minimum.  Damp carpets are slippery and you could fall and hurt yourself.  Damp carpets are also more readily soiled when they are walked on (they clean your shoes for you, and leave the soil in the carpet.)

Remember the importance of vacuuming (please read carpet and upholstery cleaning process) and vacuum your carpets on a regular basis with a quality vacuum, preferably one with a true HEAP filter.

Spot your carpets and upholstery as soon as the spot happens, or at least as soon as you discover the spot.  Remember that spots are usually easy to remove if taken care of right away, but if allowed to sit can become stains that are extremely difficult or impossible to remove.  (please read our enclosed spot guide)

If spots reappear after cleaning, or your not satisfied with any portion of your cleaning experience, please refer to our guarantee section and call Overcast Restoration Inc. at 406-265-2511.
